Why an event management company? Why a caterer at a drinks party or a painter to re-decorate the kitchen? You could of course do it yourself but with not enough hours in the day anyway, surely better to hand it over to the experts?

By hiring an event management company you are effectively bringing in the experts, and with them the benefits of handing over all, or a small part of, your event to someone with the experience, the time and the vision to make your event shine.

It doesn’t matter at what stage you employ an events company. At 12 Degrees we arrive on the day simply to oversee logistics on site, as an extra pair of hands for emergencies, or just to check in delegates at the welcome desk.

Venue searching is a free service – our commission comes from the hotel booked, so as long as you can give us a date, a number of attendees, and some idea of the location, we will do the rest.

Or we can take your brief from the outset – however detailed or vague – and turn it in to reality. With over ten years’ of experience, we can suggest venues, activities, equipment, suppliers, caterers and the rest to fit your budget and your theme. We have got the time to research and put together proposals that are easy and quick for our busy clients to read, and make fully informed choices, and we can take your event from concept to completion with as much or as little involvement as you want, or have time for. But ultimately it will still be YOUR event – personalised, professional, fun – whatever your goal 12 Degrees can produce it.

After a show-stopper of a wedding, 2011 has begun well for the Royal Family. It could get even better on 4th June, as following the success of Carlton House in the Dante Stakes last weekend, HM The Queen is the proud owner of the Derby favourite.

Her Majesty has never previously won the world’s most prestigious flat race, and in over 40 years of breeding and owning race horses, Carlton House, a present from Sheikh Mohammed, looks like her best chance to date. If The Queen’s horse wins the Derby on June 4th, the roar from the racecourse crowd will heard in Birmingham!

Hospitality packages are available for all days of the Derby meeting at Epsom, and the glamorous world of horse racing is a fantastic day out, providing drama, excitement, and the opportunity to air the glad rags and sip champagne, in a stunning setting.

If horseracing isn’t your bag, then the excitement is building now for Wimbledon, with the French Open beginning next week and as the world tennis juggernaut grinds its way towards the UK, the French Open provides an opportunity to re-acquaint yourself with the top players and the characters, before Wimbledon opens. Make sure you are fully prepared to be in position if Andy Murray gets to the final.

12 Degrees can organise hospitality for 2 people upwards at all the summer’s big sporting events. To see what’s on offer, visit the Events diary on the website, or if you are after a bespoke package, whiz us an email. info@12degrees.co.uk

Events Calender :: The University Boat Race 2011

University Boat Race 2011 Oxford

In our family the annual University Boat Race is an institution. My parents always had playfully divided loyalities: dark blue for my father and light blue for my mother. It would seem that historical family colours transcend even marriages…

I only discovered the true spectacle of the Boat Race when I first attended following my graduation. Alongside a group of friends, I managed to secure a fantastic place on Putney Bridge for the start. This is probably the second best place to be, capped only the being at the finishing post at Chiswick. Perhaps, though, one of the greatest aspects of watching the Boat Race anywhere along the course is that it’s a free event.

Believe it or not, stress is good. Without stress, we would all live lacklustre tedious lives of boredom and monotony. Positive stress is what motivates us to make discoveries, to pursue challenges, to strive and to achieve. However, there is a point where stress stops being a positive motivator and takes on a more destructive course. When this happens, particularly within a staff team productivity will inevitably take a nose dive.

The first challenge for any employer is recognising when your staff team’s essential stress levels have gone over the top and are plunging them into poor performance. The second challenge is deciding how to remedy the situation. A great way to unravel issues ensnaring an over-stressed staff team is through directed team building exercises.

A rare opportunity lurks on the horizon. It would be easy to poo-poo England’s recent trouncing of Italy in this year’s 6 Nations Rugby Tournament. Italy may be the weakest team but they are no push-over, and England’s home performance demonstrated a re-invigorated, youthful and ambitious side.

England remains nominally at the top of the table, but the real test will be the clash against ancient rivals France. Another comfortable victory over France at home may well secure England’s success at this year’s 6 Nations.

Staff incentives have come a long way from the office party, the Christmas turkey and the gold watch. Even minimal incentives such as these are relinquished at great peril to the employer. Several years ago, North Lincolnshire Council stopped sending council staff an annual Christmas card. There was outrage and discontent  which rumbled through the many employees for months…

North Lincolnshire Council’s removal of Christmas cards is a salient example of how not to value your staff team. There is minimal expenditure involved in sending personalised Christmas greetings to your staff team, however large. The feelings of resentment and lack of appreciation experienced by North Lincolnshire Council’s staff had a long-lasting and detrimental effect on morale and productivity. A staff team who feel under-valued will give you low-valued service.

Hallmark Awards Ceremonies are big news this week. As the British film industry recognises our wonderful home-grow talent with last night’s BAFTA awards, the entertainments industry now looks ahead to arguably the greatest awards ceremony of all: the Oscars.

The BAFTA’s and the Oscars are multi-million pound events attracting huge corporate sponsorship and exposure. However, awards ceremonies on a much smaller scale are a wonderful way to reward achievement, motivate productivity and promote excellence within your industry, or even within your own business or locality.

Following the traditional Clipper Route between Europe and the Antipodes, yachts leading the Barcelona World Race are notching up speeds of 23 knots as they take full advantage of extreme southerly latitudes. Although safety gates are in place to protect yachtsmen from the perils of southerly ice-flows, there is a always a dilemma in the exact course chosen in these waters.

In the Southern India Ocean, a lack of land mass below the Cape of Good Hope channels strong prevailing winds westwards. The ‘Roaring Forties’ and the ‘Furious Fifties’ accurately describe the violent winds found at these extreme latitudes. Judging by current race leaders, yachts venturing as southerly as they dare are ranking up by far the fastest speeds. However, this needs to be counter-balanced by the increased risk of ice berg encounters.
