Believe it or not, stress is good. Without stress, we would all live lacklustre tedious lives of boredom and monotony. Positive stress is what motivates us to make discoveries, to pursue challenges, to strive and to achieve. However, there is a point where stress stops being a positive motivator and takes on a more destructive course. When this happens, particularly within a staff team productivity will inevitably take a nose dive.

The first challenge for any employer is recognising when your staff team’s essential stress levels have gone over the top and are plunging them into poor performance. The second challenge is deciding how to remedy the situation. A great way to unravel issues ensnaring an over-stressed staff team is through directed team building exercises.

Team building events offer a ‘break away’ from the usual business operation and serve as a valuable way to forge better working relationships, foster creativity and highlight problem solving and leadership skills.

There is a difficulty faced by businesses in the current strained economic climate. With tightened cash-flow and leaner operating costs, businesses can find their training budgets tightened to strangulation. There is an obvious dilemma. On the one hand team building exercises are shown to increase productivity and improve staff confidence, hopefully leading to increased profitability. Unless you’re a novelist or a solo window cleaner, the chances are you work as part of a team. Even the smallest business partnerships have to function as a single unit, with each partner bringing his or her particular skills to the business practice.

It is imperative that any business divided into a team structure enables its teams to work effectively, maximising the full potential of each person within any particular team. Working together as a whole whilst recognising the unique contribution of individuals is the overall purpose of good team-building experiences.
