Believe it or not, stress is good. Without stress, we would all live lacklustre tedious lives of boredom and monotony. Positive stress is what motivates us to make discoveries, to pursue challenges, to strive and to achieve. However, there is a point where stress stops being a positive motivator and takes on a more destructive course. When this happens, particularly within a staff team productivity will inevitably take a nose dive.

The first challenge for any employer is recognising when your staff team’s essential stress levels have gone over the top and are plunging them into poor performance. The second challenge is deciding how to remedy the situation. A great way to unravel issues ensnaring an over-stressed staff team is through directed team building exercises.

Staff incentives have come a long way from the office party, the Christmas turkey and the gold watch. Even minimal incentives such as these are relinquished at great peril to the employer. Several years ago, North Lincolnshire Council stopped sending council staff an annual Christmas card. There was outrage and discontent  which rumbled through the many employees for months…

North Lincolnshire Council’s removal of Christmas cards is a salient example of how not to value your staff team. There is minimal expenditure involved in sending personalised Christmas greetings to your staff team, however large. The feelings of resentment and lack of appreciation experienced by North Lincolnshire Council’s staff had a long-lasting and detrimental effect on morale and productivity. A staff team who feel under-valued will give you low-valued service.

Hallmark Awards Ceremonies are big news this week. As the British film industry recognises our wonderful home-grow talent with last night’s BAFTA awards, the entertainments industry now looks ahead to arguably the greatest awards ceremony of all: the Oscars.

The BAFTA’s and the Oscars are multi-million pound events attracting huge corporate sponsorship and exposure. However, awards ceremonies on a much smaller scale are a wonderful way to reward achievement, motivate productivity and promote excellence within your industry, or even within your own business or locality.

Choosing the correct team building activity for your organisation is like choosing a restaurant for dinner. Finding a restaurant is not based simply on hunger (we’re hungry, therefore we will eat here). The decision making process is far more complex, and the outcome should satisfy the needs, tastes and appetites of the whole group. The same is true of team building activities. Most businesses recognise the overall need, but finding the most advantageous activities to fulfil this need is often over-looked.

Before opting for a certain team building package, as a customer you should be asking yourselves some pertinent questions about your team, their functioning, and your expectations following the training.

From the largest multinational corporations to the smallest limited companies, all businesses employing a group of staff will recognise the value of team building. Team building events offer a ‘break away’ from the usual business operation and serve as a valuable way to forge better working relationships, foster creativity and highlight problem solving and leadership skills.

There is a difficulty faced by businesses in the current strained economic climate. With tightened cash-flow and leaner operating costs, businesses can find their training budgets tightened to strangulation. There is an obvious dilemma. On the one hand team building exercises are shown to increase productivity and improve staff confidence, hopefully leading to increased profitability. On the other hand, team building costs money, with some events beyond the means of smaller business or those with tight margins.

A solution to this is the use of treasure hunts. These can be managed or self-run, and are an excellent cost effective solution to providing good quality team building for your staff.

According to social-psychologists, the third week in January is the ‘most depressing’ of the year. Consumers are feeling the post-Christmas pinch, and business owners are experiencing the seasonal drop in sales. This is therefore the perfect time of year to be planning a sales initiative, either in terms of generating increased turn-over of existing products or launching new ranges.

A wonderful way to generate interest in business products and services is through a well-organised sales conference. A rejuvenated and positive sales team is one ready to seek out new markets and increase sales.

January and February usually offer the most challenging trading period of the year. Consumer and business to business trade tend to be sparse after the pre-Christmas booms. Although successful business planning should more than compensate for these seasonal trends, a staff team can feel deflated and demoralised at this time of year.

Team building and incentive travel are two methods companies employ as motivation tools, and can be successfully combined to reward entire teams as well as individuals. The cold dark winter months of the New Year can be transformed by the prospect of a skiing trip. If this is offered as a team reward it not only motivates productivity but also acts as a team building exercise in its own right.

The traditional model of 9-5 Monday to Friday is being increasingly replaced by a plethora of working patterns marked by flexibility. Larger companies are better placed to employ this relaxed style with a sufficient number of staff members to ensure coverage throughout the working week.

Flexibility in working hours is beneficial to both the individual staff members and the company as a whole. Larger companies are able to employ a greater diversity of staff members whose domestic arrangements would normally exclude them from a traditional 9-5 working pattern. Individual staff members can enjoy a more positive work/life balance with flexible working patterns creating more professional opportunities.

This all sounds very rosy. But there is an inherent weakness in this model…
