Police unit ‘Operation Podium’ hopes to have learnt how bogus ticket websites work after the scam websites that sold fake tickets were set up before Take That tickets went on sale in October 2010. They are closely monitoring for fake website that are claiming to sell tickets for the London Olympics 2012.

None of the 6.6 million tickets for London 2012 should be on sale before 15th March 2011.  Detective Chief Inspector Nick Downing told the BBC: “His top priority was to combat ticket fraud, especially bogus websites” The unit is currently running 16 operations.

World Class Events are big business. Developing economies battle with established Western Democracies to win the honour of hosting hall-mark competitions such as the Olympic Games, the Football (Soccer) World Cup and International Trade Expositions. Static international events still carry great prestige, for example the Australian Open Tennis Tournament currently in play, or the Edinburgh Festival.

Nation states believe that the hosting of an iconic world event can bring international exposure and economic benefit. Whilst the jury is out as to the financial balance-sheet following a world class event, the opportunities offered to businesses during the actual events are huge.
