A rare opportunity lurks on the horizon. It would be easy to poo-poo England’s recent trouncing of Italy in this year’s 6 Nations Rugby Tournament. Italy may be the weakest team but they are no push-over, and England’s home performance demonstrated a re-invigorated, youthful and ambitious side.

England remains nominally at the top of the table, but the real test will be the clash against ancient rivals France. Another comfortable victory over France at home may well secure England’s success at this year’s 6 Nations.

For the first time in the history of 6 Nations Rugby, some fixtures this year have taken place on a Friday night. On this year’s opening weekend, England played Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff with an 8pm Friday kick-off. This has caused much controversy, not least from local hoteliers and associated businesses who claim that this pre-weekend scheduling has damaged the profitability of hosting the fixture in Wales’ premier city.

Rugby Union pundits claim that Friday night fixtures increase the visibility of the game, and encourage European-wide audiences. Certainly TV revenues are larger from a Friday night game, with the BBC reporting peak viewing figures at 8.1million.

This is all very well for those enjoying the game at home or at the pub. But how will week-day fixtures affect businesses who tailor their services around such hallmark events?
